An Ontario County man was arrested yesterday after he attempted to move into someone’s vacation home on Canandaigua Lake last month.
Todd D. Blauvelt Jr., 18, of Gorham was charged yesterday with second-degree burglary, a felony, and punishable false written statement, a misdemeanor, said New York State Police investigator Mark Eifert.
Blauvelt, his 15-year-old girlfriend and her family were all found inside a nearly-6,000-square-foot multi-million dollar lake house in South Bristol by the property owner, Eifert said. Blauvelt allegedly convinced his girlfriend and her family that he had inherited the house from his deceased grandfather and invited them to move in, Eifert said.
The group was discovered by the homeowner after they were inside the house for about an hour, Eifert said.
It appeared that Blauvelt had previously taken other friends to the house and told them the same inheritance story, but said his father refused to give him the house key, Eifert said.
“That justified him snooping around looking for a hidden key,” Eifert said. “Eventually, he was lucky enough to find one. He even made copies.”
It was not clear how or why Blauvelt picked that house.
When troopers arrived at the house and questioned Blauvelt and his girlfriend’s family, Blauvelt outlined the fictitious inheritance story on a signed deposition, Eifert said.
Troopers said the girlfriend and her family were not charged because it appeared that although they accompanied Blauvelt into the house, they did not knowingly commit a crime, Eifert said.
Blauvelt was arraigned in Bristol Town Court and was remanded to the Ontario County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
He is also facing charges of sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors. He was arrested on those charges last week. He is accused of having sexual contact with his underage girlfriend, troopers said. He’s being held on $5,000 cash bail on those charges.
