Celebs Kick Off BET Hip-Hop Awards Week in ATL with BBQ/Cookout…
Last night, NYC-based marketing/PR firm the 135th Street Agency kicked off the awards festivities with its 5th Annual BBQ, which was held in Atlanta for the first time.
Over 400 VIPs packed Piedmont Park’s Magnolia Hall, including event co-hosts Fonzworth Bentley and Kelly G (BET’s EVP, Music Programming), along with featured DJs Drama, Trauma and Traci Steele.
Spotted in the crowd of party goers were Da Brat, Ray J, Devyne Stephens, Dondria, Lil Duval, French Montana, Verse Simmonds, Jovita Moore (WSB TV anchor), Kwanza Hall (Atlanta City Council), Faune Watkins (actress & wife of Derek Watkins aka Fonzworth Bentley), D.Woods, Shanti Das, Derek J and more.

Honestly, I had NO idea what to expect. It was unreal with Bottles of Ace Of Spades that lined the front of the carnival. Jay’s guests included wife Beyonce, Estelle, Questlove, Alex Rodriguez, Angela Yee, Charlamagne tha God, Kevin Liles, Steve Stoute, Mike Kyser, Shawn Pecas, Andre Harrell, Sylvia Rhone, Elliot Wilson, Danyel Smith and more. Jay’s family was also on hand including his mother Gloria (Co-Founder of The SC Foundation) and sisters Michelle and Annie.
I spoke to an obviously proud Jay-
“I got an email this morning and it said ‘some people climb the ladder to success and then pull the ladder up behind them and then some people climb that ladder and then once they get to the top, start pulling people up behind them.’ And then it said ‘and you’re one of those people’ and that was the first email I got this morning, and that felt…kinda nice. This all wasn’t necessarily my plan. And it’s not that there was one particular moment. Its just that I know where I’ve come from and as I’ve built piece by piece I know I have a responsibility to help those who come behind me. There’s going to be more executives than artists, and they are going to need an education, so if I can help…He left that sentence unfinished as he shrugged and went off to play some carnival games.
Food was provided by the likes of The Spotted Pig and Milk Bar. Grey Goose made sure Jana Fleishman (Jay’s Super Hero publicist) and the adorably infectious Sharada Maddox finally got a moment to taste the custom cocktails. Between ticket sales, raffles, and sponsor donations, last night they raised $1,033,000.00 in scholarship money. How cool is that?

Japan Developing Mini Noah’s Arks In Fear Of Next Tsunami
I can’t lie these “Noah” inventions are pretty dope and clever! In fear of another tsunami hitting Japan, a small Japanese company has developed mini Noah’s Arks which are pretty much like big, floating tennis balls that would help save lives. Each tennis ball looking contraption can hold four adults! Read more after the jump.
A small Japanese company has developed a modern, miniature version of Noah’s Ark in case Japan is hit by another massive earthquake and tsunami: a floating capsule that looks like a huge tennis ball.
Japan’s Cosmo Power says its “Noah” shelter is made of enhanced fiberglass that can save users from disasters like the one on March 11 that devasted Japan’s northern coast, leaving nearly 20,000 people dead or missing.
Company president Shoji Tanaka says the capsule can hold four adults, and that it has survived many crash tests. It has a small lookout window and breathing holes on top. It also can be used as a toy house for children.
The company completed the capsule earlier this month and already has 600 orders, including two delivered.

Waka Flocka Celebrity Bowling Match + Mizay Entertainment Gives 10 Homes Away Free
Tonight Waka Flocka held his first Annual Celebrity Bowling match, attended by hip hop artists, producers and industry execs and supported by two other celebrity foundations and corporate sponsors, was an incredible gift to the community. That is until the community imploded on itself. Shortly after Deb Antney, CEO of Mizay Entertainment announced that her company would donate ten homes to single and grandparent headed households, shared the microphone with fellow Philanthropist and entertainment mogul Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and a round of applause was given to her son Waka Flocka for pledging to donate $50 per strike during the evenings festivities, chaos was abound.
To be clear, while taking one of many photos with a fans during the evening, an artist who had previously been under his helm approached him with malice, words were said and our client was forced to defend himself. The aftermath, though dramatic, left no one seriously injured and saw the majority of the crowd dispersed without incident.
After working with security to ensure that all parties had safely departed the property, one of my Sr. Partners- Lola Sims and I had the occasion to talk with (Ludacris’ mom) who noted that when the craziness began, she asked security “if there was a gun”. When they assured her that there were no weapons involved. She instructed her team to keep on playing and let the security do their jobs.” She laughed with us as she told us that we had better be sure to note that “The Luda Foundation was victorious, beating both Rah Rah’s Village of Hope and Toya Wright’s Visual Beauty with an impressive TEN STRIKES!)”
Seriously, fights happen especially when big celebrities making themselves accessible to their fans. It sucks that this happened but let’s not let it overshadow its purpose. It was and still is about the community.
I am so pissed I was late and didn’t get to cover the event like I wanted too. Waka and his fam made it very clear to me that he does not support violence and that it was sad people turned what was a great night to nigga sh*t, is so uncool.
Waka hold yo head up homie people will always try to bring you down don’t let them. It still was a great event and a night I will never forget. P.S. yall had to see his mama babieeee!!!! She don’t play, I love a boss!
