Well-known Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has died at the age of 82. Davis spent 38 years with the club, beginning his tenure with the Raiders in 1963.
At that time, Davis was the team's head coach and general manager. He did leave the Raiders for a short time in 1966 to serve as commissioner of the American Football League (AFL), but returned just months later and marked the event by buying his first stake in the team.
Since Davis reunited with the team, he has led the Raiders to three Super Bowl victories, the last of which came in 2002. In more recent times, Davis has drawn a lot of fire and criticism for sporting relatively futile Raiders squads that have struggled to post winning records.
Davis' death comes at a time when the Raiders are starting to emerge again as an NFL power. Led by star running back Darren McFadden, the Raiders currently sit at 2-2 (with losses to quality teams in the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots) and promise to challenge in the AFC.
Davis will be remembered for his contributions to both the Raiders and the league at large. He leaves behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.
